Still on lock-down since Wednesday March the 25th.<br />

Here are some of the things that I have done online while on lock-down, Level 4. Many of these are new skills:<br />

<li>created a google form for response from students about their physical activities at home</li>
<li>organised a roster for specialists to make blog comments for 'their classes'</li>
<li>responding to emails from parents & students with queries about sport</li>
<li>created a spreadsheet with all of our students & class blog links for future use </li>
<li>saving resources & ideas that I've copied from social media platforms</li>
<li>paid for a resource in order to use their images for my online content</li>
<li>shared a few resources with sports leads in the area</li>
<li>wrote & shared some ideas of how to engage reluctant students in P.E. & sport</li>

Famous basketball coach John Wooden's quote "If we fail to adapt, we fail to move forward" is true to what teachers have to go through during this time. We have to adapt, we have to be open and we have to be resilient and learn how to teach differently. I am thankful that I have had the time to learn new things and I feel blessed to have many kind experts I can call on to help me become more digitally fluent as we progress forward in to a new era.</div>

Surreal. Reality. I felt a sense of renewed energy and focus, that everything we are learning today is purposeful, it's meaningful and it's important. It is what our whanau are expecting us to know and to produce accessible, quality education for their children so they are continuing to learn and stay on track with their progress. I feel very privileged to have access to this professional content that is necessary to create remote learning material for our students.</span><br />

Something new that I learnt today was how to use those responses in a spreadsheet to create charts in analysing those. One thing I need to do more often is to share a survey, post-game or post-tournament with students so I can receive their immediate feedback of that event. I haven't done that before. It would be interesting to read their perceptions and use the information to make appropriate improvements.</span></span><br />

For the post netball season, I can use forms to collect reflections from coaches, managers and players and families. </span><br />

Once it's complete, the senior teacher will share the link on their class sites. Depending on the number of responses, I can share that each week before we are physically back at school.</span><br />

I haven't used it like we practised today which was using data from a spreadsheet (city, country) and inserting the link of that spreadsheet to 'my map' which automatically creates pin icons on the world map, very impressive! With my learners, by using the google form for responses on a spreadsheet, we can create pin icons on the world map of where they are from, what countries they have travelled to, mark places of countries who took part in a world cup etc. </span><br />

I would use it to mark out accurately our cross country course, for athletics, how long it takes to walk from our school to games and tournaments, how far it is to walk to the nearest rugby club, the netball courts, to other local schools, the college for basketball. Our students can relate to this and I believe it will engage their interest - we can discuss metres, kilometres, making estimations, width, length, area, time and distance.</span></span><br />

Using a Panmure Bridge's student's blog post on how to analyse her own blog, I followed her instructions to create my own. My confidence increased in knowing that if I can create something like this, I can use this with my learners. For House Captains, we can place the results from an athletics day and find out which house had placements for 1st, 2nd and 3rd for points. I can also use this to share with our whole community, how many students played in each code for a year and the age groups. I could also use the data to work out the end of year prizegiving winners. If I can create a player of the day form for each coach or manager with a 3-2-1 point system, I have an efficient way of collecting the evidence to use at the end of the year. I need to work on this one...</span></span><br />

Student editors or our Creative Space teacher produce highlights of the day and this is shared on our daily P.E.N.N school news network, also visible on our website, sports blog and archives. Our school community gets to celebrate their effort and achievement.</span><br />

I can be more creative in using google draw to create appealing flyers for my sports club, for promoting a sports hui, fundraisers. I don't have to be an amazing artist or graphic designer to make one, I have the confidence to produce something that can be just as good. It may take some practise but so does every good thing that is worth doing.</b><br />

An area that I greatly desire to improve in, is to become more digitally savvy, particularly in my role where communication is key to how sports can run more efficiently at Pt England. For 9 weeks, I will be a part of the 25th Cohort to complete the Digital Fluency Intensive Course (DFI) that is facilitated by the staff from the Manaiakalani Education Programme.<br />

This is an alternative to creating groups from your contact list. It is creating one email address e.g. teachers@ptengland.school.nz where messages are sent to every teacher under a topic and every response goes out to everyone. This is one way to keep information and communication about a topic in one space. With the permission of our senior management team at school, I would like to create group emails for<br />

NETBALL...I received an email, recently asking "Pt England Netball - how do you do it?" as the person was investigating around low decile schools and their participation in sport. Pt England is a school that they always referred to as a school that is low decile but is so active with their netball at the Auckland Netball Courts. This post is a response to that email with a few bits that I've added.<br />
<br />
Basically, it's hard work and it takes a 'whole village' to make things happen, but it's worth it. Bottom line is that we don't want our children and families to miss out due to financial reasons. The 'investment' in to our netball programme is not just about the children, but it's about strengthening our relationships with our parents, and empowering them to "look up" and be engaged with the community. We find it rewarding when families see the joy on their child's face, their connection to team-mates and their potential for a better future. It is also about empowering our volunteers and staff in sports coaching and management.<br />

<b><br />FEES</b><br />
For several years each player paid $60. Each time the fees went up, we cringed and we reluctantly increased it to $70. That would only cover the fees. We add up all the team fees plus the umpire fees for Years 5-8 (we book ANC umpires because we can rely on umpires showing up) and this puts less pressure on our volunteer coaches who are already doing almost everything...Fees are paid at the school office by cash or eftpos or online through internet banking. In November or December each year, we have a school-family consultation meeting (about the curriculum subjects, camps, sports fees etc), where we decide on how much to set the fees for our netball teams. Feedback from families is that they need a lot of notice about fees and due dates. A lot of parents like the part payment option, to be given the opportunity to pay it off on a regular basis, example $5 a week or when they get some extra money, they chuck it on their fees. It takes a few families 3 terms to pay off their fees (Terms 1-3). When the season is over, we stop giving friendly reminders.
So with this kind of payment structure, we pay the full fees in May (when it's due to the ANC) and the umpire fees out of our sports budget, which leaves hardly anything left for other codes/equipment etc. When parents pay their fees, they are putting money back into our sports budget.<br />
<br />
<b>UNIFORMS</b><br />
Since our sports budget becomes smaller after paying the netball fees, we don't have enough to purchase new uniforms. Our Year 4 & 5 teams are basically wearing uniforms that we've had for about 20 years. The seniors are wearing cheap ones that we got on sale at Postie Plus several years ago and are falling apart. I am currently looking for grant funding to purchase new uniforms for all of our teams. What's very urgent is uniforms for our senior teams (Years 5-8). Our older girls feel more comfortable in wearing skirts and tops that are a size bigger than what they are. Dresses tend to creep up and become 'too short'. Our Year 1 to 4 students wear dresses and love that.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>DONATIONS/SPONSORS/FUNDRAISERS</b><br />
It's been a few years since I've ordered brand new netballs. We have been using second hand netballs that have been donated by people in the wider community (former netball coaches) and the ANC (through lost property) or we have re-used what we had the previous year.
We have a few fundraisers during the year such as the running the Weetbix kids triathlon car park, a cake stall and sausage sizzles during the breaks at school.
The Variety Club NZ - they're awesome. The money that people donate to the club is available for eligible parents to pay off their netball fees, to purchase any netball shoes or a school sports hoody. Parents have to apply for this funding.
Staff members tend to pay for students with hardship circumstances.
Shoes - strangers and staff members donate used shoes that I keep in a box at school. They are given out to players who don't have any shoes and for ones who 'forget' them on 'netball day'. Any spares are given out to other school students in need of shoes. Their feet are growing all the time.<br />
<br />
<b>VOLUNTEERS</b><br />
Like any sporting code, no coach - no team. We are so blessed to have the majority of our teams coached by staff members who volunteer their spare time. They are awesome. The other teams are coached by a parent, older siblings/cousins and former students and we really value their contribution. Many of them are new to coaching but want to give it a go so that their child and their friends don't miss out. That's a heart of gold in our community. However new volunteers can come with a wide range of personal, sporting experience, hence why I try to buddy up coaches with a staff member so that everything can run smoothly - our staff members know each student, their story and are more able handle tricky issues. Our staff members are also modelling how to be professional, inclusive, positive and encouraging. We are working with the children AND our families.<br />
<br />
<b>MY ROLE</b><br />
My role is that I coordinate the whole programme and help resolve any issues, with the support of our senior management team (Assistant Principal & Principal). I am also Plan C for everything. Coach is Plan A, Manager is Plan B. If neither of them can make it to a game or take a training - I am plan C. I co-coach a team on Tuesdays so I won't get to see all of the other teams play but I will be there on Thursdays from the first round to the last to offer support and encouragement. I love watching our students play.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>2019 TEAMS</b><br />
We are looking at having 15 teams this year - so far it looks like this:<br />

11. Year 7 - coached by 2 former students, current staff members (no siblings in the team)<br />
12. Year 7 - coached by a mum, managed by a teacher<br />

14. Year 8 - coached by a teacher & managed by a couple of people i.e. our Board of Trustees Chairperson (dad), office staff member and former coach (who is having a baby in March)<br />

<b>GAME DAY ROUTINES</b><br />
Straight after school, all teams meet in the hall for a 10 minute briefing. They sit in team lines, I take the roll call & give them reminders e.g. short nails, sportsmanship etc - parents are usually there & I give them reminders too. After 10 minutes, one team at a time will collect a piece of donated fruit from the front of the hall and will go to their coaches to a space in the hall (this 10-15 minutes gives teachers time to get to the hall after they lock up their classrooms etc). We had a grandmother who baked cookies for every junior team for the past 6 years. Each child would get a cookie and a piece of fruit as their snack before the game. Often with games after 5:00 p.m. - players are sent home to be dropped back off to the court half an hour before their game. Student without a ride will be picked up by the coach or manager.<br />
<br />
<b>COMMUNICATION</b><br />
Google spreadsheets and documents are our best friends. I have a google spreadsheet with all the team and player information, key dates, fees paid, uniform allocation, results, players of the day etc.
I give out weekly newsletters on Mondays. Team captains collect them from my office at 2:30pm to deliver to their team-mates. Spare ones are left in a cubby hole outside my office for those who may have missed out. I have a large, visible notice board outside my office with the team lists and draws and also in the staffroom & the school office. Coaches send team reminders by creating their own newsletters or by text. I text / email / or talk face to face weekly with volunteer coaches and managers, to check on how they're doing, so they feel supported and also get the latest news/updates from the ANC.<br />
<br />
<b>CELEBRATION </b><br />
Weekly school assembly on Friday mornings. Players of the day receive a certificate in front of the whole school and stand up on the stage with other recipients.
Our own netball prizegiving is in late September on a Thursday night to coincide with pay day (not Monday to Wednesday). Families and staff bring a plate of food to share. School provides the beverages. Each student receives a participation certificate and a lolly necklace. Three extra awards are given out from each team:<br />
1. Most Improved<br />
2. Sportsmanship<br />
3. Most Valuable Player<br />
Each team says their team chant and presents their coaches and managers with a thank you card and any gifts they can manage to put together. This is an opportunity to thank other people and advertise for new volunteers.
In December, we have a special Volunteers Morning Tea shout where all of our coaches are invited to this. Team photos are taken at the end of the season. Parents purchase these from Photolife for $15 or $17 depending on the size.<br />
<br />
<b>TRANSPORT</b><br />
We are blessed to be 5 minutes down the road from school. Our staff and available parents transport the students to the courts from school (those who play after 5:00 p.m. have to go home then meet at the courts - sometimes our staff pick them up from home). Parents are expected to pick their child up from the courts. But we make sure that we support the mums and families who don't have vehicles or have little ones and can't leave home to pick their child up We don't have any school vans however our Associate Principal kindly allows us to use his van to drop off teams to the court. We have a few parents and students who walk to and from the courts. We try to avoid this happening because it's cold and too wet on some days and it can be a bit of a walk, especially if they live on the other side of Glen Innes. No one gets left behind at the courts. On their permission slips, there's a bit where I ask parents if their child can't be picked up or dropped off, would they give permission for the staff and other parents to do so. Some parents indicate that they strictly go home with family only. We try to always cover ourselves.<br />
<br />
There are other things that we do that's tailored to our school community. But essentially, there's a lot of people involved in making this work for our students. Fees, transport and lack of volunteers are obstacles for low decile communities. We are fortunate that I am also employed full time to look after our sports programme (we have 9 rugby teams and 5 basketball teams plus other sporting codes - so winter is a very busy time!).<br />
<br />
You need key people who have the time, passion, the faith and capacity to drive the programme. But you have to also be realistic and work with what you can manage. Hope those are some insights in to our netball programme. It's not perfect and every year is different. My focus this year is on a group of intermediate boys who are generally, the most outstanding athletes across all codes in our school. The focus is on their oral literacy, by expanding their vocabulary and teaching them the language to articulate themselves in different sporting settings.<br />
<br />
The students are two Year 8's and two Year 7's who have been captains or vice captains for our school sports teams. The Year 8's are a prefect and a house captain, so they are in roles where they are expected to speak to large groups of people as school leaders.<br />
<br />
I would like for them to learn about the '<u><b>when and what to say':</b></u><br />
<ul>
<li>to ask questions (e.g to the coach, match officials)</li>
<li>to use social etiquette </li>
<li>to react to the opposition's words (good or bad)</li>
<li>to justify a decision they made on the field or court (be able to explain in detail)</li>
<li>to explain the coach's game plan to their team-mates</li>
<li>in a half time time talk (how to critique the game & come up with a strategy to improve)</li>
<li>to match officials (e.g how to approach or talk to a referee)</li>
<li>in a captain's speech (e.g. who to acknowledge, to have a an opinion)</li>

Mainly because I haven't worked on developing the sport site so there wasn't anything to share. The last time I worked on it, it was taking about half an hour to create one button, I couldn't work out how to centre them on a page...I got lost with the 'coding', then there were too many buttons, it looked too busy, lots of pages to update...etc. It became frustrating and discouraging. I just wished that someone else could create the site and I just updated it. <br />

My inquiry was about having a site for everyone to use but creating it has been the problem. <br />
<br />
In the meantime I continue to inform students, parents and volunteers through texting, emails, face to face meetings and newsletters. That is still working. My school holidays over the next couple of weeks will be spent simplifying the sport site...delete, delete, change...have a coffee...google "how to" etc... so that it becomes manageable. How do you get more children playing sport? How do you get whanau support? How do you find good volunteers?<br />
<br />
There are a couple of ways that have been effective so far:<br />
<br />
1. Face to face chats<br />
2. Texting<br />
<br />
In this digital day and age of multiple social media networks, it's the face to face conversation with someone, that is still engaging and effective. Texting a volunteer or whanau directly, is what I also find is successful.<br />
<br />
I'm fortunate, that in my role, I'm able to walk around and be available to chat with students, families and the local community. My office is located in a handy place that's near the main school and hall entrance, the toilets and the office reception area. It's the central location of our school where I see lots of students and whanau - it's the opportunity to 'catch up' with them.<br />
<br />
Face to face chats with students is basically having a chat with individuals to see if they'd be interested in playing a sport, what sport etc. I listen and try to 'read' their reactions, their body language and what they're trying to say. Then I offer options that they'd possibly be interested in or offer solutions to what hinders them from playing. I chat to them about the benefits for them, encourage them to 'have a go' and invite them to 'join in' anytime. I leave the conversation to say that I'm available to chat more about it, to go away and think about it and to contact me anytime (whether I'm out at a practice on the field somewhere or by leaving a note in my office mail box or by email).<br />
<br />
The texting form of communication is so good too. There's always someone who has forgotten to give their parents the newsletter or they'd missed watching P.E.N.N, or they'd forgotten what the coach had said or they can't even remember what day it was today...<br />
<br />
By texting a parent or whanau member directly, they'd receive the most recent news, given friendly reminders and are informed about any changes. By being accessible by mobile phone (99.8% of adults I imagine, have one) is very helpful for parents so they get answers straight from the adult in charge. It's also a good way to gage what support is needed, an opportunity to be encouraging and positive in all circumstances and most importantly, a favourable time to share how great their kid is.<br />
<br />
It would be interesting to see how much more we can engage our students and community when the sport site is updated...<br />

I've narrowed it down to 2 areas of personal and professional interest. First, there's the sport site...using this online location as the one place to inform a larger focus group: everyone in our school and local community.<br />
<br />
Then there's another area that absorbs my interest, the 'face to face' interaction I have with a selected group of children, like the sports council (house / sport captains) and the 'gifted' students who are in every sports team - these children that I see almost daily. My desire is to see them become all rounded happy athletes, who embrace education and develop a resilient and reputable character.<br />

The second group is the one that drives my practise to become a better teacher, coach and manager. But maybe one way to work smarter and to reach a larger number of athletes and the community (apart from the sports council & gifted students), is by developing the sport site as the hub for everyone. A place to learn from, to teach from, to inform, to celebrate, to accelerate. <br />

<br />
I spend a lot of time in Google Drive, updating documents regularly - there's a lot of information and lots of children and adults that I work with daily, so that in order to remember everything, I make the time to put the details in the docs to refer to at any time. I've also learned over the past few years, to consolidate what's needed and what's useful.<br />
<br />
It's important that I document this information for:<br />
<ul>
<li>Board of Trustees reports (usually once a term)</li>
<li>an annual review at the end of the year</li>
<li>budget purposes</li>
<li>prizegiving awards</li>
<li>to track our progress with physical education and sport </li>
<li>make improvements for the following year</li>
<li>evidence to report back to the child, teachers, parents & the ERO (Education Review Office)</li>
<li>provide feedback to sports organisations</li>
<li>share our history to current teams, parents & clubs</li>
</ul>

I'm so thankful that I'm able to store all of this 'in the cloud' that I can access from any device, anytime - with the peace of mind, knowing that even if my laptop crashes, the information is still kept safely in the school's google domain. Phew!!</div>

I started with a hiss, bang and a roar in Term 1, because I wanted to prove and share with the entire universe, about how sport makes a difference to our students in all aspects of their life...<br />

...but lots of sport has been going on in Term 2 - it was a busy term of winter sport - coordinating volunteers and students who were practising and playing football, netball, rugby, rippa rugby, league, basketball and ki-o-rahi - a lot of learning and fun going on.<br />
<br />
But not a lot has been happening with my 'A' team - the intermediate literacy group I intended to work with, on a weekly basis or the other focus groups I wanted to develop as well. It basically came down to the four letter word of t.i.m.e and I wasn't able to work with them c.o.n.s.i.s.t.e.n.t.l.y. Then I found that the less time I had for them, the more awful and guilty I felt. It had to be a clever juggling act. The organisation, communication, coaching and managing people received a lot of my attention.<br />

It was until recently, I attended the annual national PENZ (Physical Education NZ) conference a few weeks ago in Hamilton that it inspired me again. It was my first conference where educators ran workshops on physical education, health and education outdoors. It inspired me to pick up the baton and try again. To find the essence of how sport in our school setting can enhance their learning outcomes.<br />
<br />
I particularly was encouraged by the work of high schools who use sport as the context of curriculum learning and showed positive, dramatic results.<br />
<br />
So what does that mean for me and where I'm at now? Start again. Plan again. Seek help - find someone to put a literacy plan together. Visit the 2 Auckland high schools who have a 'Sport in Education' programme. Plan again. Then make t.i.m.e for the 'A' team even if it's not on the same day or time each week, but they are the highest p.r.i.o.r.i.t.y group to focus on.<br />

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">This term I will be working specifically with 4 groups of students on a weekly basis. On Friday, it was the first time that I met with Group 1: The 'A' Team.</span><br />
<br />
There are only 2 students in this group: both females in Year 8 (12 years old), who are working below the national standards in reading, writing and maths. I chose one of them (Alice - not her real name) because I was her first teacher when she started school at the age of 5, who right from the start had the ability to play all sports - she <span style="line-height: 1.38;">is considered to be our best rugby, touch and league player, and has represented us at competitions in other sports such as netball, softball, cricket, swimming, volleyball, shot put and discus - apart from the need to work on her fitness, she has 'the skills'. </span><br />
<span style="line-height: 1.38;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: 1.38;">I chose the second student (Abby - not her real name) because I</span><span style="line-height: 1.38;"> have also coached her in rugby union and league since Year 5 (9 years old) - she too, is an all round athlete, also playing netball, basketball, cricket, touch, tag football, volleyball and winning titles at our school and inter-school long distance cross country and short distance sprint events. I enjoy coaching these 2 students because they are teachable, they are competitive, they're team players and they're confident enough to share their thoughts on how we can improve as a team - I'm sure they could coach and manage a team themselves.</span><br />

<span style="line-height: 1.38;">Anyway, the reality is, these lovely girls are not at the academic level that they should be working at, for their age group. They are conscious of it, even anxious and have a strong desire to become 'brainier' and to have a good school report, to meet their parents expectations.</span><br />

I'm not sure whether to reveal their names because they are sensitive about their learning needs and the public domain that I'm sharing their progress on - so at this stage, I will just give them European names. They both have beautiful Pacific Island names that start with the letter 'A', hence why they decided to call themselves the 'A' team so for now, I'm just calling them 'Alice' and '<span style="line-height: 1.38;">Abby'.</span><br />

Throughout the week, Alice in particular was really looking forward to our time on Friday morning (10.00am-11.00am). I noticed over the last term, that she had become 'quieter', almost sad at times. When I ran a trial for tag football, I noticed that she didn't turn up, which was strange because this is one sport she could outplay anyone else in. F<span style="line-height: 1.38;">or someone who used to visit my office often, over the past 4-5 years, wanting to </span><span style="line-height: 1.38;">chat about upcoming practises and games, she wasn't around and I began to wonder what had changed.</span><br />
<br />
So the opportunity came about, when we were on the Year 8 Leadership Camp (3 weeks ago) to ask her about how everything was going for her. She was basically anxious about her grades. So when I asked her, if she would like me to help her with her school work, her face lit up - I think this could be the weight on her mind lately - but I guess, time will tell.<br />
<br />
First session objectives: To find out where we're at and to create some goals.<br />

This was an interesting exercise. We shared a google document and created a table, where the girls had to put in their latest work from their reading, writing and maths tasks for the week. They could easily find their work, they knew what groups they were in but they couldn't tell me what level they were on and what level they should be working towards. One thing they did know however, was their reading age (of an 11 year old), and they remembered that from their results from last year. <br />
<br />
Their main concern was to get a good mid-year report that they need for high school enrolment applications. Their long term <span style="line-height: 1.38;">goal was that by the end of this year, they wanted to be able to read, write and have the numeracy knowledge and skills of a 13 year old or higher.</span><br />

So if the proof is there, how can we be more intentional to ensure that children receive the amount of time that can make a difference? I found a research report on the website of the Department of Sport and Recreation from the Government of Western Australia, called <a href="http://www.dsr.wa.gov.au/support-and-advice/research-and-policies/brain-boost">Brain boost: Sport and physical activity enhance children's learning</a> by Dr Karen Martin, University of Western Australia. I saw the link that was shared on the Sport NZ website. As us Kiwis know, the Aussies love their sport and always have a bit of a competitive edge over us.</div>

So basically this report provides an update of evidence from Australian and international research that proves that increased participation in sport and in other forms of physical activities enhances learning and better grades. And I say, amen!</div>

Exercise improves cognitive functioning, memory, concentration, behaviour and academic achievement for children. However the report also highlighted, that in reality with an increasing pressure on schools to achieve academic success, physical education and sport is likely to be 'pushed down the curriculum' and could even look like less than 10 minutes a day in schools. </div>

The <a href="http://www.sportnz.org.nz/managing-sport/programmes-and-projects/sport-in-education-project-">Sport in Education Project</a> that's being piloted in eight different New Zealand secondary schools is something that I'm really interested in. <i>It's aims are to develop, trial and evaluate if increased participation in sport and physical activity, leads to improved academic and social outcomes that benefit the students, schools and communities.</i><br />

<li>the children who come from supportive homes and strong families</li>
<li>the absent child who doesn't want to come to school </li>
<li>the children who want to play in a pay-to-play sports team but can't afford it</li>
<li>the children who want to play in a team but don't have a coach</li>
<li>the children who are 'all rounders', who do well in sports, academics, the arts</li>

The groups are not separate as a number of children can be several of those things combined - I'm mindful that each child is unique and that they learn in different ways and need time to develop at their own pace. <br />
<br />
So what I would like to do, is to share ways of how I've tried to use sports or physical activities to help an individual on their journey to become a better person and to transfer the disciplines learnt in sport to improve their lives and their academic status. <br />

Or about 25 girls who will trial for netball and you can only take 9, 30 boys for league and you can only choose 14? Next week I'll begin trials for a Year 5 & 6 rippa rugby team - I'm predicting that we'd get around 40 boys and girls who will turn up, but I can only select 12 to take to a tournament next month.<br />

So what I'm faced with, as in the case of the tag football trials - there are potentially 3 good teams we could take to a tournament, but I'm the only coach, which means that there'll be only 1 team going. Who misses out here?<br />

I really wish I could take them all, because I know that they'd really enjoy the experience of participating in a sports competition - I see smiles, I see tears, I see strength, I see friendship, I see confidence, I see pride, I see parents, I see grandparents, I see hugs, I see nice lunches, I hear cheers, I hear happiness. This is what I feel that the kids are missing out on...</div>

So what does this have to do with raising academic achievement? I believe that some of the most powerful learning for children takes place in a sporting environment where the key competencies are fostered, especially in managing self, in thinking, in participating and contributing and in relating to others. <br />

My inquiry journey begins with thoughts on, how can sport improve a student's academic results. I think that if someone experiences the peace, happiness and self satisfaction that comes with great effort in achieving success in sport, then they can apply that same determination towards studying to produce the desired results in reading, writing and maths at school. I believe this is possible and I'm sure that there are many worldwide stories of athletes who have accomplished this. So I'm glad to take some time to investigate this further and find out, how this can be done in our school.</div>

The first step in my journey, is to update the areas of online communication that I'm responsible for, so that everyone gets the big picture of what sport looks like at our school. The two online areas are the Pt England School Sports Blog and the Pt England School Sport Site. I have numerous google documents that records the athletes in various events, organisational plans, reports and other administrative files. This will take some time to sort, edit and publish - but will help me identify an area to focus specifically on, who, what and how does sport raise the academic achievement of our athletic students.</div>
